Q: I installed Mail Alert, now what?

To configure Mail Alert, select "Mail Alert Options..." from Outlook's Tools menu. This will display the Mail Alert options dialog which allows you to configure how Mail Alert will display desktop alerts.

Other than that, just wait for the incoming e-mail message that meets the criteria you set and a desktop alert will be displayed.

Q: How do I configure Mail Alert?

To configure Mail Alert, select "Mail Alert Options..." from Outlook's Tools menu. This will display the Mail Alert options dialog which allows you to configure how Mail Alert will display desktop alerts.

Q: If Mail Alert shows an alert for an e-mail that contains a virus am I at risk?

No. Mail Alert doesn't render any HTML or formatted text, unlike Outlook's preview pane. Although opening an e-mail from an alert is the same as opening the e-mail from within Outlook so the normal risks apply.

Q: Does Mail Alert support Outlook Express or any other third-party e-mail applications?

No. Mail Alert only supports Microsoft Outlook 2000, Outlook XP (2002) and Outlook 2003.

Q: Does Mail Alert require Outlook to be running?

Yes. Mail Alert an add-in that runs inside of Microsoft Outlook.

Q: What e-mail account types (e.g. Exchange, POP3) does Mail Alert support?

Mail Alert supports Microsoft Exchange, POP3 and IMAP accounts. Hotmail (HTTP) support is currently in the works, which may also allow for other third-party account types.

Q: How do I change Mail Alert's current locale (language)?

Mail Alert will choose a language based on your Windows Regional and Language Options, if available. Though it can be overridden manually by adding a '<LocaleID>' tag entry to \Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\MailAlert\MailAlert.xml as follows: <LocaleID>{LCID}</LocaleID>, where {LCID} is the Locale ID of the language. A chart of Locale IDs can be found here.

Example - Force Mail Alert to use English by adding or updating the following line:
